Project Collaboration with WebFiles
If you want to make a file available for download, just move or copy the file to your shared directory. Files in your shared directory can be accessed at:
https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/YourWebFilesUsername/shared/filename.ext
filename.ext is the name of your file including the file extension that goes with the file. For example, if you had a Word document named "MyPaper", your filename.ext would be "MyPaper.doc".
Try the following exercise to see how the shared folder works:
- Open a web browser but DO NOT log in to WebFiles.
- Go to the following URL:
https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/YourWebFilesUsername/shared
YourWebFilesUsername is not your CalNet ID - it's your WebFiles username.
- Next, click the link to Launch WFS WebUI.
- Log in to WebFiles using your CalNet ID.
- Click the shared folder to enter it.
- Upload a file to your shared folder.
- Click Log out.
- Go to your shared folder URL again (https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/YourWebFilesUsername/shared) and Voila! Shared files!
Sharing Files with specific people
If you'd like to share a specific file but you do not want to make it accessible to the entire world, you can Create a Guest Ticket. Check out our Getting Started page to find out how to use WebFiles "Tickets" instead of email attachments.
Sharing Folders with specific people
If you have more than a single file to share you may want to dedicate a new folder to your project. Once you've done so, you can choose to make that folder publicly accessible, or accessible to only certain people.
To create a new shared folder:
- Click New Directory
and enter a name for your new folder.
- Click the sharing link
next to your new folder.
- You may now choose to make your folder a) Shared to the entire world or b) Shared to specific people:
Sharing your Folder with the Entire World
To make the folder accessible to anyone in the world, change the permissions so that Users with accounts and Public have READ access.
Files in this folder can be accessed at https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/YourWebFilesUsername/YourFolderName.
-
Sharing your Folder with Specific People
To make the folder accessible to specific people, make sure the permissions are set so that Users with accounts and Public DO NOT HAVE READ access.
If you are sharing your folder with WebFiles users, you can add them to the share by clicking Add User/Group
.
If you would like to share the folder with non-WebFiles users, create a Guest Ticket for your folder by clicking the Tickets button
.
