June 25, 2008
IST will discontinue the WebFiles service this Friday June 27, 2008. Customers will need to move any files they wish to keep prior to this date. IST will not retain files after this date. Several campus services support file storage and sharing, and web site hosting.
Our recommendation for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in basic web-based file storage is bSpace (https://bspace.berkeley.edu/). bSpace accounts include 1 GB of storage at no direct cost. To help with this transition, we have created two Knowledge Base articles providing instructions about migrating files from WebFiles to bSpace. Please see:
http://kb.berkeley.edu/kb2546 "Uploading Files to bSpace"
http://kb.berkeley.edu/kb2545 "WebFiles Migration to bSpace"
Departments that require more advanced document management features may wish to consider CalShare (https://calshare.berkeley.edu/Pages/default.aspx). This service costs $53/month per site. Each CalShare site includes 1GB of storage as part of the monthly fee.
An alternative for customers seeking web hosting is the Open Computing Facility (OCF). The OCF is a volunteer student run service on campus. This service, while not financially supported by IST or other campus departments, offers the ability to host a website at no cost to students, faculty or staff. Please see:
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/
IST offers a variety of more advanced web site hosting solutions, such as CalWeb. Customers can review these IST services at:

Security Awareness Policy (Storing Personal Information on WebFiles)
The campus is in the process of selecting an encryption package. Therefore, data of a sensitive nature should not be stored on WebFiles until further notice. We will notify users on the WebFiles home page if and when a compatible encryption solution becomes available. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Examples of restricted data include: an individual's name in association with Social Security Number, Credit Card Number (with authorization code), or Drivers License Number. Many other types of data that associate sensitive information with individuals' identities also must be protected, such as student, employee, financial, research, or facilities data.
If you are not sure about how to protect the important information you have, do not put the data into Webfiles.
